The music ministry of St. Stephen Baptist Church has grown considerably since its humble beginnings in 1926. The choirs in the early music department were small in number, but were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Sis. Clora Cosby was the first minister of music, and Bro. Louis “Buddy” Miller was the first church organist.

Dr. Kevin W. Cosby was called to pastor St. Stephen Church in 1979, and under his pastoral leadership, the structure of the music ministry has changed dramatically.

In 2000, Dr. Cosby was led by God to appoint Joe Leavell as the director of the Temple Choir, and under his leadership, the choir has grown from 65 active members to over 150 today.

The Temple Choir is one of several choirs that comprise the St. Stephen Music Ministry, and is skilled in several genres of music including: hymns, anthems, spirituals, traditional gospel & contemporary gospel .

After one year on the job, our director, led by the Holy Spirit, was moved to invite some of the areas dynamic local preachers to our weekly choir rehearsals to impart the word of God as it related to material the choir was preparing for Sunday worship services. The preachers were very inspiring and helped the choir to understand to a greater degree, the biblical applications of the songs they would soon minister.

The Temple Choir continuously strives to introduce the Saints of God to innovative /cutting edge approaches to worship and music ministry by implementing drama, orchestra, liturgical dance, and mimes to compliment the vocal presentation.

The choir has ministered in several states including, Tennessee, Missouri, and Wisconsin.

In August 2003, the Temple Choir one first place in the National City Bank Great Kentucky Gospel Shout Out Louisville regional showcase, and later won the state title as the first place winners of the 2003 National City Great Kentucky Gospel Shout Out.

In November 2005, The Temple Choir ministered at the Grand Gala celebrating the opening of the Muhammad Ali Center performing with Be Be & Ce Ce Winans, and Reuben Studdard.

In July 2006, The Temple Choir recorded its first live recording entitled "God Is Able", which is due to be released January 9, 2008.
